The so-called renewables sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the world as it endeavours to keep pace with the relentless demand for clean energy in support of government policies introduced to combat global climate change. In 2023, the size of the market was estimated to be more than I trillion US dollars with forecasts anticipating growth to reach 4.32 trillion USD by 2032. The industry comprises many sources of renewable energy generation including solar, wind, geothermal, ocean, biomass and hydro, all of which are expanding rapidly to provide a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
According to IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, the sector employs more than 16 million people globally many of whom are freelancers or self-employed individuals working on an assignment or project basis. Of this total, further analysis from IRENA suggests over 7.3 million people work in the Chinese solar PV (photovoltaics) and wind sectors, 1.6 million in Brazil and 1.8 million in the countries that comprise the European Union (EU).
The accelerated transition to renewable energy sources has created a buoyant recruitment market with companies scouring the globe for skilled individuals and offering lucrative remuneration and benefits packages for experienced workers. These factors dictate that the employers and recruiters in the renewable energy sector are reliant upon the services of EOR consultants and international contractor payment services to help them hire the staff they need to meet demand.
